Text Box: High blood pressure (hypertension) is defined as a blood pressure greater than or equal to 140 mmHg systolic pressure (top number) or greater than or equal to 90 mmHg diastolic pressure (bottom number).  Systolic blood pressure is the force used when the heart beats and diastolic blood pressure is pressure in the arteries between heartbeats. 

Hypertension or high blood pressure is associated with an increased risk of the following: 
Coronary heart disease
Stroke
Kidney failure

One is at higher risk for hypertension if he/she is: 
African-American
Middle-aged or elderly
Obese
A heavy drinker
Taking oral contraceptives

Blood Pressure Goals: 
120 mmHg / 80 mmHg

These goals can be reached with a combination of the following: 
Maintain a desirable body weight or lose weight if overweight. 
Exercise regularly.
If on medications, take them regularly. 
Check blood pressure regularly.
