Text Box: In the United States today over 50% of adults are considered overweight or obese. Approximately $51.6 billion dollars were direct medical costs associated with diseases attributable to obesity.

The main concern in being overweight or obese comes from the documented increase in health problems that occur to those that fall into these categories. To find out what category you are in, calculate your BMI - Body Mass Index.

Take your weight in pounds and multiply by 703.
Then divide this number by your height in inches.
Then divide this number again by your height in inches.
That is your BMI.

Which category does your BMI fall into?
	19-24.9 normal
	25-29.9 overweight
	30-34.9 obese - class I (clinical)
35-39.9 obese - class II (significant)
40 or greater obese - class III (clinically severe)

As a person has increasing weight for height and advances up the BMI weight categories, their risk for developing disease conditions with more severe complications increase dramatically. Some of these chronic diseases include heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus type 2, osteoarthritis, hypertension, and some cancers. It is obvious that early intervention to promote weight loss or prevent weight gain is very important in reducing the risk of developing these chronic conditions.
